Ashington Crowned Britain’s Most Life-Changing Station
After a week of passionate campaigning, thousands of public votes, and stories celebrating the power of rail to connect communities, Ashington has been officially crowned Britain’s Most Life-Changing Station in this year’s World Cup of Stations, hosted by Rail Delivery Group.
Following more than 330 nominations from across Britain, a judging panel of industry leaders, historians, and public figures shortlisted 20 standout stations for the public vote. Over five days, more than 24,000 people took part to decide which station best reflects the power of rail to connect, inspire, and transform.
Ashington stood out for its remarkable comeback story for one of the country’s newest rail stations - passenger services were restored in December 2024 after a 60-year hiatus, transforming local travel by connecting residents to work, education, family and friends. The town’s proud sporting heritage—home to World Cup winners Jack and Bobby Charlton, cricketers Mark Wood and Steve Harmison, and footballer Jackie Milburn—is reflected in the station’s modern, accessible design, featuring step-free access, cycle storage, and EV charging.
As well as being a gateway for commuters, Ashington Station has become a vibrant community hub, showcasing artwork by local schoolchildren and forming the start and finish of the Ashington Local Heroes Walking Tour. Ashington is also home to the Pitmen Painters, an art group whose work remains internationally celebrated. Its reopening has helped drive regeneration, linking the town to new opportunities and cementing Ashington’s place on the national map once again.
Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Rail Delivery Group, said: “As we celebrate 200 years of rail history, Ashington shows how investing in stations can transform lives — linking people to opportunity, pride, and possibility. It’s a brilliant example of how the railway continues to change Britain for the better.”
Tricia Williams, Northern’s managing director, said: “I’m delighted with the result, as it shows that Ashington is having such a positive impact on people’s lives after being open for less than a year.
“It was up against some really tough competition in the final round but still managed to win the public vote.
“I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to open this station for customers in Northumberland and keep services running, day in day out."
Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said: “Stations are the beating heart of our railway network, linking communities from coast to coast and making travel seamless and accessible for millions of people every day.
"With this year marking 200 years since the birth of the passenger railway, it's the perfect moment to celebrate our brilliant stations across the UK and share the powerful stories of how they’ve shaped lives. A big congratulations to Ashington station.”
Ian Lavery MP said: "The success of the Northumberland Line in its first ten months, even before all stations have opened, has been nothing short of phenomenal. Ashington station, in particular, has become a vital link for local people, dramatically reducing travel time and strengthening connections between Ashington and Newcastle.
"This recognition is a testament to the station’s importance to the community. Ashington has a proud sporting heritage, having produced international athletes and World Cup winners. It’s fantastic to see the station not only nominated but winning this award, a reflection of its role in revitalising local transport and pride.
"Crucially, this achievement would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of local campaigners who fought for the station’s reopening, and the dedication of everyone involved in delivering the project. Their work has helped reconnect communities and open up new opportunities for the region."
Alice Loxton, Historian, author and broadcaster, said: “Congratulations to this year’s winner of the World Cup of Stations. It’s brilliant to see how many people have been inspired by stations and thank you to everyone who took part. As we celebrate 200 years of railway history this year, it’s wonderful to recognise their important role in our lives for two centuries, and the ways they shape our lives today.”
Emma Roberts, programme manager for Railway 200, said: “As we celebrate 200 years of the modern railway, this fantastic competition reflects the immense civic pride and heart-felt personal stories behind some of Britain’s best-loved train stations. Congratulations to Ashington and all the history-making, life-changing stations that were shortlisted.”
The World Cup of Stations continues to spotlight the vital role stations play in connecting people and places and this year’s competition was part of the Railway200 celebrations marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway. The World Cup of Stations shone a light on the stations that have changed lives and brought people together, whether through regeneration, accessibility, culture, or community spirit over the last two centuries.
