Laindon, Basildon, Berney Arms and Leeds City in the race to be crowned World Cup of Stations 2026 champion

  • Four East of England stations will compete in the Anglia, East Coast and East Midlands division of World Cup of Stations 2026
  • This year’s competition celebrates “The stations creating connections that matter”
  • Public voting runs from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 October, with the winner announced on Tuesday 20 October

The race to crown the World Cup of Stations 2026 champion begins on Monday 12 October, with Laindon, Basildon, Berney Arms and Leeds City competing for the public’s support.

Bringing the rail industry together to celebrate “The stations creating connections that matter”, this year’s competition gives people the chance to choose their Station of the Year. The four contenders in the Anglia, East Coast and East Midlands division are among 20 stations shortlisted across Britain for the difference they make to the people and communities they serve.

Following over 150 nominations from the public, a judging panel selected stations whose stories show how the railway brings people and places together. Now it is over to the public to decide which one deserves the crown.

The shortlisted stations in the Anglia, East Coast and East Midlands division are:

  • Laindon connects an urban community with the nature on its doorstep. Through wildlife partnerships, local artwork and community activity, the station gives residents a welcoming place to share pride in their environment and discover nearby green spaces.
  • Basildon has become a place where young people and local partners can express the town’s identity through creativity. Community artwork gives residents a visible stake in their station and helps thousands of passengers feel the pride and personality of the place.
  • With no public road access, Berney Arms proves that even the most remote station can create remarkable connections. Reached by rail, boat, foot or bicycle, it opens Norfolk’s marshes, wildlife and railway heritage to explorers from near and far.
  • Leeds City Station connects people with safety, support and opportunity. Through pioneering assistance for vulnerable and neurodivergent passengers, youth engagement and compassionate colleagues, it shows how a major station can make every individual feel seen, welcome and protected.

Dan Mann, co-CEO of Rail Delivery Group, said: " This competition is an opportunity to celebrate the wider impact of our railways. The stories behind this year’s shortlisted stations show how rail helps people and communities thrive. Whether opening up opportunities, supporting local projects or bringing people together, each of these stations is making a real difference.

“As we move towards a simpler, more joined-up railway through Great British Railways, these stations highlight the important role our railway plays in connecting people, places and communities.

“This is your chance to celebrate that work. Read the stories, get behind your favourite and help us crown this year’s champion.”

Rob Mullen, Chief Customer & Commercial Officer, GBR Anglia, said: "To have three of our stations across GBR Anglia recognised in this year's World Cup of Stations final shortlist is fantastic. Basildon, Berney Arms and Laindon stations are all great examples of the connections we have forged within our local communities and, in the case of Berney Arms and Laindon stations, their links to nature."

David Dubaj-Downs, Network Rail head of customer and station transformation, said: “We’re delighted that Leeds station has been shortlisted because it’s much more than a transport hub. It plays an important role in supporting passengers, connecting communities and providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone who uses it.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our colleagues and partners who work every day to help thousands of people travel with confidence. We’re proud to see Leeds highlighted for its work supporting vulnerable and neurodivergent passengers, engaging with young people and making a positive difference in the community.”

Last year, Ashington took the title following the return of passenger services after a 60-year absence. This year, Laindon, Basildon, Berney Arms and Leeds City will be hoping to follow in its footsteps.

Voting takes place online at raildeliverygroup.com/WorldCupOfStations from 00:01, Monday 12 to 23:59, Sunday 18 October. On the evening of Wednesday 14 October, the leading station from each regional group will progress to the final stage, leaving five stations in the race for the crown. The station receiving the most votes will be announced as the winner on Tuesday 20 October.
