Summer Travel Alert: Rail travel is up to 70% cheaper than domestic flights, so ditch the plane and take the train this summer

  • Travelling by rail can be up to 70% cheaper on similar routes than flying
  • Travelling by plane takes longer than by train door-to-door for four out of the six domestic travel routes we looked at.
  • There are over 7 times more rail services available per day from Manchester to London compared to flights (46 rail services compared to 6 flights when looking at the date 5 August).

With summer holidays well underway, many are planning their getaways. While air travel might seem like the go-to option, Rail Delivery Group’s updated ‘Clearing the Air’ report reveals that choosing rail over air travel for domestic journeys this summer can offer significant savings.

The research focused on providing a like-for-like comparison of air and rail travel in Britain. Advance fares for both modes of transportation were compared across six routes, considering additional costs. Unlike flying, rail fares are often cheaper even before considering additional costs like baggage fees and seat selection. For instance, travelling between Manchester and London by train can save customers a whopping £250 compared to flying.

You can also save 1/3 off most rail fares with a Railcard, making it more affordable to travel domestically. With a variety of railcards available such as Students, young people, seniors and those with disabilities can benefit from further savings.

There are also special offers and promotions available on National Rail and train ticket retailers websites, so make sure you look before you book.

Rail customers have protections in place if they experience delays or cancellations. The Delay Repay scheme offers compensation for train delays, ensuring customers are fairly compensated for their inconvenience.

Jaqueline Starr, CEO at Rail Delivery Group said: “It’s time to rethink domestic travel this summer. In a like-for-like comparison with air travel, taking the train is often cheaper, more sustainable and convenient way to travel with free baggage allowance and seat selection included in most fares.

“Make the most of summer by travelling on rail—experiencing real-life moments, from family holidays to catching up on the way to work. Rail connects us to these important moments safely, quickly, and comfortably.”

Rail travel has numerous advantages. Compared to air travel, rail travel generates significantly lower carbon emissions, making it a more sustainable choice. For example, rail is up to 17 times greener when travelling during the week compared to air travel according to new Green Travel Pledge data, making rail a more sustainable choice.

Patricia Yates, CEO at VisitBritain/VisitEngland said: “Traveling by train is a cost effective and sustainable way to explore Britain this summer. Rail travel opens up iconic destinations and attractions to visitors with hidden gems and stunning scenery revealed along the way. The ease and convenience of hopping on a train means visitors can access less explored destinations and local businesses, in a relaxing and environmentally friendly way, encouraging visitors to discover more and stay longer, boosting local economies.”

Silviya Barrett from Campaign for Better Transport said: “Choosing to travel more sustainably whenever we can is one of the most effective things we can do to reduce our impact on the planet. This new report backs up our own research and shows that taking the train not only saves carbon emissions, it can also get you there quicker, save you the hassle of airport security and leave you more spending money in your pocket this summer.”

With more frequent departures and direct access to city centers, trains offer greater convenience and flexibility. Rail travel often proves quicker than flying when considering total journey time, including airport transfers and security checks.

With its affordability, environmental benefits, and convenience, rail travel is the perfect choice for exploring Britain’s vibrant cities this summer. With substantial cost savings, reduced travel time, and a smaller environmental footprint, rail travel is the smart and sustainable choice for a memorable summer getaway.
