Customers to benefit from pay as you go technology at additional 47 stations in the South East from the end of September

  • From 22 September 2024, customers will be able to pay as you go with a contactless card or device at another 47 National Rail stations in South-East England.  
  • Pay as you go offers a more flexible and convenient travel experience as customers can tap in and tap out at stations, simplifying rail travel. 
  • Pay as you go with contactless will be offered to customers as another way to pay for their journey. Alongside existing pay as you go options (e.g. Smartcard, Oyster) where these are available for their journey, customers will also be able to continue to use barcode and paper tickets.

Summer Travel Alert: Rail travel is up to 70% cheaper than domestic flights, so ditch the plane and take the train this summer

  • Travelling by rail can be up to 70% cheaper on similar routes than flying  
  • Travelling by plane takes longer than by train door-to-door for four out of the six domestic travel routes we looked at.    
  • There are over 7 times more rail services available per day from Manchester to London compared to flights (46 rail services compared to 6 flights when looking at the date 5 August).

Customers reminded to check before they travel due to upcoming one day strikes and overtime ban across train companies in May

  • ASLEF will stage three, one-day strikes, across different train operating companies between 7 to 9 May, as well as an overtime ban across 16 train companies from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May, which may lead to short-notice cancellations;   
  • Revised timetables for the strikes will be available on National Rail Enquiries and journey planners by 1 May;  
  • Customers are urged to check before they travel as there will be changes to services across large parts of the network, with some train operators not running any services on strike days;    
  • Customers who have to travel should expect disruption, plan ahead and check when their first and last train will depart.

Train tracks triumph - new findings show that trains are up to 80% cheaper than planes for domestic travel

  • Travelling by rail can be up to 80% cheaper on similar routes than flying, when accounting for the additional cost of baggage and airport transfers.  
  • Rail is up to 17 times greener when travelling for business across Britain compared to flying.  
  • Travelling by plane takes longer than by train door-to-door for four out of the six domestic travel routes we looked at.   
  • There are 50% more rail services available per day from London to Edinburgh compared to flights (39 rail services compared to 26 flights).

Customer advice ahead of the latest train drivers’ strike

  • ASLEF will stage three one-day strikes across different train operating companies between 5 to 8 April, as well as an overtime ban across 16 train companies from Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 April and from Monday 8 to Tuesday 9 April, which may lead to short-notice cancellations;

Rail travel is almost nine times greener than by car on the Top 100 business routes new figures show

  • New carbon data shows that you can substantially decrease emissions if you switch from car to train for business travel across Britain.  
  • Taking the train on the top 100 business routes in Britain is:   
  • o Almost nine times greener than using a petrol/diesel car     
  • o More than four times greener than using a plug-in hybrid electric car     
  • o Almost two-and-a-half times greener than using a battery electric car 
  • This is the first time the rail industry has combined granular data on train occupancy, fuel type, exact journey distance and many other factors to create detailed, accurate and reliable carbon emission data for rail business travel.   
  • Later this year we will be releasing carbon data for all point-to-point rail business routes across Britain.
